Why The Black Star Steel Band

The Black Star Steel Band is a 7 piece Glasgow based steel band.

The name of the band was derived from the 'black star' in the middle of the tri-colour ( red, yellow, green ) of Ghana. This was chosen as the symbol and name in 1992, because the original founder members were all from Ghana.

The foregoing members originated from a steel band formed with the aid of Glasgow City Council in 1990 during the year of culture celebrations.

The band have extended the format of the traditional steel band by adding saxophone to the usual selection of steel pans and percussion. They play an energetic mix which takes in Calypso, Samba, Soca, Reggae and African styles, as well as, Pop and Jazz.

In addition to regular gigs around Scotland involving weddings, community galas, Caribbean nights, birthday parties etc they have supported Rod Stewart at Hampden, Taken part in Glasgow International Jazz Festival and a recent guest appearance on Balamory ' Broken down Bus' episode, as well as partaking in Children's Classic Concert at the Royal Concert Hall Glasgow.
